Background of the Study
Women play a critical role in environmental conservation, particularly in rural communities where they are often responsible for household resource management and agricultural practices. In Gombe South Local Government Area, women are actively involved in activities such as water collection, forest resource management, and soil conservation. However, despite their involvement, women's contributions to environmental sustainability are frequently overlooked in formal environmental management policies (Garba & Usman, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the role of women in environmental conservation in Gombe South, examining their contributions to sustainable agricultural practices, resource management, and the preservation of local biodiversity. By understanding the specific roles women play, the study aims to highlight the importance of integrating gender considerations into environmental conservation policies in Gombe State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While women in Gombe South are central to daily environmental practices, their efforts in conservation are often undervalued. This results in missed opportunities to enhance community-based environmental management and policies that could effectively address local environmental challenges. This study will examine the extent to which women contribute to environmental conservation, the challenges they face, and how their roles can be enhanced through targeted policies and support.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To assess the contributions of women to environmental conservation in Gombe South.
• To identify the challenges faced by women in engaging in environmental conservation activities.
• To explore the potential for increasing women’s participation in formal environmental conservation programs and policies.
1.4 Research Questions
• What are the primary roles of women in environmental conservation in Gombe South?
• What challenges do women face in contributing to environmental conservation in Gombe South?
• How can policies and programs be designed to enhance the involvement of women in environmental conservation efforts in Gombe South?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Women in Gombe South play a significant role in environmental conservation activities.
• H2: Women face various socio-economic and cultural challenges in fully participating in environmental conservation.
• H3: The integration of gender-sensitive policies can improve women’s participation in environmental conservation efforts in Gombe South.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the critical role of women in environmental conservation, especially in rural areas. By highlighting their contributions and challenges, the study will help inform policies that recognize and support women as key agents of environmental change (Garba & Usman, 2023). The findings will also contribute to the broader discourse on gender and environmental sustainability, fostering more inclusive approaches to conservation in Gombe South.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Gombe South Local Government Area, examining the roles of women in environmental conservation, the barriers they face, and the potential for enhancing their participation. Limitations of the study include the challenge of quantifying informal contributions to conservation and potential biases in self-reported data regarding women’s activities.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Environmental Conservation: The protection, preservation, and management of natural resources to prevent depletion or degradation.
• Gender-sensitive Policies: Policies that are designed to address the specific needs and contributions of both men and women, ensuring equality in access and opportunity.
• Sustainable Agricultural Practices: Farming techniques that preserve the environment, maintain biodiversity, and ensure the long-term health of the ecosystem.
